The 2008 Saint Joseph Vignes des Hospice is a great effort in the vintage, and is better than a number of more expensive cuvees. Giving up plenty of herbs, peppered steak, smoked earth, graphite and crunchy blackberry-styled fruit, it’s medium-bodied, layered, and beautifully textured, with good ripeness and plenty of tannin. Drink it anytime over the coming decade. Jeb Dunnuck.

Even the 2008 St.-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice, from a difficult vintage, is an outstanding effort. Incense, camphor, black currants, cherries, licorice, crushed rock and graphite characteristics are present in this dark ruby/plum-colored wine that defies the mediocrity of the vintage. A sleeper of the vintage, it is a tribute to the brilliant winemaking and elevage skills of the Guigal family. Robert Parker.

Lovely violet, white pepper, black cherry and roasted tobacco aromas and flavors are supported by a mouthwatering chalky edge that cuts through the perfumy finish. Very nicely done for the vintage. Drink now through 2015. 625 cases made. James Molesworth.
